I just love this 80s inspired royal wedding dress and you will too

We know the 80s are back but now we have royal proof and I'm loving it. Princess Marie-Caroline of Liechtenstein, who was born in the mid 90s, got married in Vaduz in a dress that might have come straight from a Kate Bush video.

I mean, look at it. The gorgeous tulle skirt with its layers of embroidery that appear like rickrack is just screaming 1980s. The whole shape, with the long drape to a tiny court style strain at the back, and a sharpish A line from the waist could have come straight from 40 years ago. It's giving Timotei ad vibes in all the best ways and now we need to talk about the top.

This is pure 80s in every sense. I love that she went with the sheer effect. All too often, we expect wedding dresses, especially the royal variety, to stick to solid satin or silk with a bit of lace. It's rare to see a princess plunge into see through for her marriage day but Marie Caroline went there and won. The embroidered tulle is shaped into pretty little cap sleeves with an oh so 80s ruffle while the resulting bodice is pretty and textured and looks great in the photos where you only see this half of the dress. Did I mention I love it?

Then we have the veil. I'm a sucker for a full on cathedral style veil and this one has the added bonus of embroidered spots to make it even more interesting. The edging is pretty but the polka dots are stand out. The tiara is called the Hapsburg Fringe and it was made for Archduchess Maria Teresa of Austria-Teschen in 1890, a phrase no one was saying after several glasses of champagne at the wedding reception which was held at Vaduz Castle following a ceremony at St. Florin's Cathedral on August 30 2025 (and now you have all the obscure info you need for a pub quiz.

The princess studied design so we knew this would be a stand out royal wedding look but what makes it even more spectacular is that she surprised us. Yes, it's white and full length and classy but this isn't your typical regal marriage gown. It's got plenty of personality about it and it would be hard to replicate without looking like you'd just copied. Which I would happily do because I think it's outstanding. No wonder the 1980s are coming back into fashion when you get a gown like this.
