Prince George of Cambridge

Born to be king, currently third in line to the throne of the United Kingdom, Prince George of Cambridge is one of the most famous people in the world and has been since his birth.  As he turns one, here's a kingly summary of what the little monarch in waiting has already got under his dungarees belt in his first twelve months and some facts and figures about the boy who will be king.

To Catherine, a son

Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge is the first child of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.  Kate's pregnancy was announced on December 3rd 2012 after the duchess was admitted to hospital with a severe form of morning sickness.  On the morning of July 22nd 2014, it was confirmed that the Duchess of Cambridge had been admitted to hospital in the early stages of labour and in the late afternoon, it was announced that a baby prince had been born at 4.24pm weighing 8lbs and 6oz.  He made his first public appearance on July 23rd 2014 when he left hospital in the arms of his mother

On July 24th 2014, it was announced that the new royal baby would receive three names - George Alexander Louis.  The Queen met her great grandson for the first time during a visit to Kensington Palace and soon afterwards, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left their London home to stay with Kate's parents in Bucklebury for several weeks.  It was there that the first official photos of Prince George were taken - by his paternal grandfather, Michael Middleton.

The christening of Prince George

Prince George of Cambridge was christened on October 23rd 2013 at St James' Palace in London in a service that began at 3pm.  The future Head of the Church of England was baptized by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in the Chapel Royal.  Also in attendance was the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres.

One more portrait of the Cambridge family was released on October 27th 2013

The prince has seven godparents including his father's cousin and close friend, Zara Tindall

He wore the same christening gown first worn by Lady Louise Wessex in 2005 and commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II as a replica of the Honiton lace trimmed dress first made for the eldest child of Queen Victoria

A small crowd of wellwishers started gathering early on the morning of the christening hoping to catch a quick glimpse of baby George and his parents and some of the 22 guests invited

The official photos will be released on October 24th 2013 and will be another chapter in the recent history of royal christenings

The early months

Prince George kept a low profile in the months after his christening and the next official photograph of him came on Mother's Day 2014 when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were shown in an image with their son released ahead of their tour of Australia ad New Zealand.

Ahead of the royal tour, Prince George became a cover star and appeared on several magazines in Australia and New Zealand as the countries prepared to welcome him and his parents.

The terrific tour

Prince George arrived in New Zealand with his parents on April 7th 2014 and immediately caused a sensation in his brief appearance at the airport.  The baby prince was the star of the show as he was carried off the plane by his mother, met the waiting officials and then headed inside.

Prince George of Cambridge carried out his first public appearance on April 9th 2014 when he joined in a playdate at Government House in Wellington run by parenting organisation, Plunket.  The prince played happily with the other children and was snapped snuggling into his mother's shoulder in an image Kate said was one of her favourites of her with her son.

The baby prince was next seen as he and his parents left New Zealand for Australia when his father carried him on to the plane taking them to Sydney.

He was snapped in a different outfit a few hours later on his arrival in Australia.

But it was on a visit to Taronga Zoo in Sydney that the little prince really stole the show.  He was guest of honour at a Bilby enclosure named after him soon after his birth and George seemed to have a great time.

The prince left Australia with his parents on April 25th 2014 at the end of his first overseas tour.

The prince has since been seen at the polo with his parents and in a photo released to mark his first birthday with more images to follow.  The first year of this future king has been picture perfect.
