Royals on social media

The royal families of Europe have been pretty busy on social media this week, sharing plenty of information about themselves as well as lots of photos. It always gives a good idea of how the courts see their seven days so to get an insight into that regal world, here are the highlights of the royals on social media.

Official visits

Europe's royals were busy on visits in the week heading hundreds of miles from home to pay visits. King and Queen of the Netherlands went to the United States where they had a meeting with an old acquaintance, US President Barack Obama. Images of the meeting were shared on the official Dutch Royal Family Facebook page.

The King and Queen of Spain went to Paris for a State Visit and hundreds of images were shared on the official social media channels. There were plenty of videos on the official You Tube channel, Casa Real TV, including one of their meeting with the Spanish born Prime Minister of France, Manuel Valls..

And the Crown Princess of Sweden headed to Portugal for two days where, as well as taking part in a yacht race, she met the country's President, Anibal Antonio Cavaco Silva, and enjoyed several cultural events with images shared on the official Facebook page.

Familiar faces

The Infanta Elena isn't seen on public engagements that often any more - since the accession of her brother as Felipe VI she is no longer part of the official royal line up. But in the week she attended a bullfight and images of her arrival were shared on the Casa Real Twitter feed.

Since her birth in June 2014, Princess Amalia of Luxembourg has lived a very private life with her parents but to celebrate the 31st birthday of her dad, Prince Felix, new photos of the little royal who is currently third in line to her country's throne were shared on the official Twitter account, @CourGrandDucale.

The Queen's cousin, Princess Alexandra, has spent decades carrying out royal engagements but she rarely makes it to the papers these days. However, she was one of the stars of the show at a garden party to mark the centenary of the Women's Institute held at Buckingham Palace in the week and an image of her, and quite possibly the royal hat of the year, was shared on the official British Monarchy Twitter account.

Behind the scenes

Royal social media isn't all about pictures of kings, queens, princes and princesses. There are often quite a few behind the scenes images shared to give an idea of what goes into making the big royal stories that dominate the news. In the week, the official Kensington Royal Twitter account posted an image of the KCVO insignia presented by the Queen to Prince Harry as she made him a Knight of the Royal Victorian Order as a thank you for his work for her and the House of Windsor.

The Crown Prince and Princess of Norway joined Victoria of Sweden at a food summit in Stockholm in the week and as lunchtime approached they shared a picture of one of the meals being discussed on their official Twitter account - it's a bit wriggly.

And as the King and Queen of the Belgians presented the King Baudouin Prize for Development in Africa they told the story of the awards through a series of birds eye images on the official Twitter account.
