The Royal Wardrobe: feeling the chill

The royals of Europe seem resistant to autumn. The weather got colder and brisker this week which seemed to press a button somewhere in the Royal Wardrobe which removed sleeves, coats and any semblance of warmth from this week's style choices. And there wasn't a sign of a shiver anywhere. Here are five style statements from this week's Royal Wardrobe - don't expect any coats.

OK, we'll let Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden off as she was indoors although the Hall at the Royal Palace in Stockholm looks rather drafty from here. But then a coat would have covered up some of the fabulous bold print dress reworn by the heir to Sweden's throne as she toured an exhibition of wedding dresses including her own fabulous creation from 2010. The print dress is chic and with everything else kept simple, it's a style statement that takes some beating.

Someone get Letizia a shawl. How the Queen of Spain didn't shiver as she walked the blue carpet ahead of the presentation of the Princess of Asturias Awards in Oviedo this week is a mystery but the dress was so spectacular, concerns for Letizia's circulation were momentarily forgotten. The sheath style dress with black embellishments is about as stylish as they come and the long updo adds another air of elegance.

Queen Mathilde of the Belgians went for three quarter length sleeves in a very summery looking dress for a visit to a design exhibition in the week, Outside, the lightness of the look could be seen as the consort was the only person in a ten mile radius with no coat. Inside, the simple style of this standout look shone through. From its cut to its colour to the addition of the glittering gold necklace, this was a winner all the way. Just chilly.

Those corridors in Buckingham Palace can be chilly but that didn't stop the Duchess of Cambridge picking what looked like a summer dress for a reception for the Rio Olympic and Paralympic stars in the week. Long sleeves and mid calf skirt didn't detract from the delicate fabric of this dress which might well be warmer with a cardigan. But then we wouldn't have seen the pretty print and wrap details of this rather lovely dress.

Another royal bride chose a rewear for the big wedding dress exhibition opening with Sofia picking a summer frock for that freezing cold hall. The pink perfection was first seen at the christening of Prince Nicolas of Sweden last October just before Sofia and Carl Philip announced they were expecting a baby of their own. A year and a son on, it looks just as lovely if rather light for the time of year. But they're clearly made of tough stuff, these royal style icons, as autumn makes no indent on their fashion choices.
