She was the royal bride who came complete with popular nickname and now Fergie is going back to her origins. Prince Andrew is giving up his titles and so is his former wife. As of October 17 2025, the woman who was a duchess of York for almost four decades is Sarah Ferguson again.
Prince Andrew announced he was relinquishing his titles in a surprise statement. He denied all accusations against him but acknowledged that ongoing revelations about his friendship with convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, were distracting from the work of The King and the Royal Family. And so he was giving up his titles. It was immediately confirmed that his former wife was doing the same.
Andrew had been made Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh on July 23 1986 on his marriage to Sarah Ferguson. She became Duchess of York, Countess of Inverness and Baroness Killyleagh following their wedding. When the couple divorced, in 1996, Queen Elizabeth II issued Letters Patent stating that the divorced wives of royal husbands would lose their HRH and their title would change. Instead of being The Duchess of York, Fergie became Sarah, Duchess of York. Now that is gone, too.
Instead, she will be known as Sarah Ferguson, the name that led to the Fergie nickname which has followed her for years. The titles of her two daughters with Andrew remain unaffected. They are still Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
It marks the end of the royal road for Fergie. Her former husband remains a prince but she now gives up the last vestige of title that she held. The title of Duke of York will become extinct when Prince Andrew dies but given the damage done in recent years, it's unlikely it will be given out again soon. York is without a duchess of any kinds and will be for the forseeable future.
