A new throne for Elizabeth II

She has sat on one of the most famous thrones in the world for 62 years and counting but today Elizabeth II was presented with a replica of one of the most famous thrones of the 21st century.  On her visit to Belfast, the Queen toured the set of Game of Thrones and came away with her own version of the Iron Throne.

The Queen was seeing how the TV series is made on a set at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast.  It's brought lots of jobs to the area and lots of money to the local economy and the Queen met some of those working on the show.

It was one of several engagements on the Queen's first full day in Northern Ireland - she arrived yesterday and held private audiences with the First Minister, Peter Robinson, and then with the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness.  Prince Philip held a reception for those involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Northern Ireland on June 23rd 2014.

Game of Thrones was first on the royal to do list on June 24th and the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh then moved on to a building that has stood for years but which has now become a tourist attraction - the Crumlin Road Gaol.  They met North Belfast MP, Nigel Dodds, and his wife, MEP Diane Dodds, before being given a tour by Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness.

The last engagement of the morning was at St George's Market in the city centre were they met traders and shoppers as they toured the many stalls.

And then it was off to lunch and a chance to enjoy the Edwardian masterpiece that is Belfast City Hall.  The Queen will hold a garden party at Hillsborough Castle during her stay in Northern Ireland as well as visiting Coleraine.  But the image of the tour might already have been taken - the world's longest reigning queen with a very new throne to call her own.
