King Harald of Norway's health worsens as doctors issue concerning update

 


King Harald of Norway's health has deteriorated with doctors issuing a worrying update on Sunday evening. The Norwegian monarch is now being treated for a bacterial blood infection, almost a week after he was admitted to hospital.


Harald, 89, is on antibiotics for the infection and is responding well to the treatment. He is stable but will be in hospital for some time longer than first expected. 

He was visited on Sunday by his wife, Queen Sonja, and his son and heir, Crown Prince Haakon who i snow acting as regent of Norway. Crown Princess Mette-Marit also accompanied them as did Princess Ingrid Alexandra, second in line to the throne. Harald's older sister, Princess Astrid, also spent time with him.

Norway's PM, Jonas Gahr Store, said the whole country was thinking about their king who has reigned since 1991. Norwegian TV broadcast a special news update as the king's condition was revealed.

Harald V became King of Norway in January 1991 and has become one of the most popular royals in the country's history.
