Cambridge baby news update

We're days away from meeting baby Cambridge number two and Kensington Palace has today confirmed some of the details of the new little prince or princess' birth. And one thing they have made clear is that no one, not even the royal parents in waiting, knows whether it's a boy or a girl. William and Kate, like the rest of the world, find out on the day their new child makes their debut.

Kate and William surprised everyone today with a royal baby announcement

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took the chance to thank everyone for the many warm wishes that have come their way since they announced that their second baby was on its way. The royal couple said that they were touched by the public reaction to their great expectations and added that 'it means a great deal to them that so many will be celebrating this important moment for their family.'

The Cambridge three will soon share another special photo with the latest member of their family

It was confirmed that the new royal will make their debut at St Mary's in Paddington and so will share a place of birth with daddy William and big brother George. But the royals have also asked that things be a bit calmer than last time round and so have requested that the media don't start gathering outside the Lindo Wing until the Duchess of Cambridge is confirmed as having gone into labour.

The royal birth will be announced by Twitter and in the traditional method of placing a short announcement on an easel outside Buckingham Palace. And if the couple follow their own traditions then the name of the newest member of the House of Cambridge will follow in a press release a little while after the family have left the hospital. But by then we'll all know the answer to one of the big questions of 2015. Boy or girl?  Just days and counting....
