Royals at Christmas: December 14th, a bit of sapphire and steel

We all need a bit of festive sparkle and today on Royals at Christmas we're getting it from another look at some of the best tiaras worn this year by Europe's royals. And there's a theme. Never mind your traditional reds and greens for Christmas, this is all about modern and a bit of blue and silver. We've seen some cracking sapphire and aquamarine tiaras this year - here are five special sparkling moments from 2015.

Queen Maxima gave us a stunning sapphire and diamond look at the State Banquet held in honour of the Dutch visit to Denmark in March.

Everyone got very excited about Kate's tiara for the Chinese State Banquet but the real stunner of a diadem belonged to her grandmother in law. Well, most of the tiaras belong to her but the Queen chose a beautiful sapphire and diamond diadem as she hosted President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng.

She might have been mother of the groom, rather than the bride, but that wasn't going to stop Queen Silvia having the best headgear at the wedding of her son, Carl Philip, in June. She went for blue for her boy but when you're saying it with sapphires, it's got added sparkle.

If you can't find a sapphire then an aquamarine is just as good and Princess Margaretha of Sweden wore her kokoshnik tiara to Carl Philip's wedding.

Her niece, Madeleine, wore the same piece to the Nobel Prizes in December and confirmed that blue really is the colour as she added sparkle to the festive season.
