Celebrating Elizabeth the Great

It's never too early to call this one. On her birthday, the 94th if you don't mind, let's call a great by the name she deserves. The world is celebrating Elizabeth II and there's little doubt in anyone's mind, she really is a great monarch.

The girl born in her granny's London home, #otd in 1926, has become one of the most successful and celebrated rulers of all time. Her reign isn't just historic because she's held the throne longer than anyone else. It's an amazing feat because she's done it so well.

You don't get to rule for almost seven decades if you're really bad at it. Subjects have a tendency to move monarchs along if they're doing a bad job. Mediocre rulers can hold tight if they don't offend that may people but Elizabeth II is far from middle of the road. She is being feted globally because of her greatness.

For the Queen's success lies not in conquering or crushing or condescending but in calmly continuing the promise she made as a young woman, still heir to a throne. She vowed to serve for as long or short a time was allocated to her and that she has done. She knows what makes her country tick and she shares its hopes and passions. She has never presumed to know better, only to understand and guide and to do what is right for her fellow citizens. That is a measure of wise rule and why, on her special day, we salute Elizabeth the Great.
