Princess Madeleine's little girl has been welcomed to the world with a real mix of modernity and tradition. Her birth was announced, in a very regal manner, by the Marshal of the Realm but with a modern twist as it was published on the Royal House's website within hours of her arrival. As is traditional, the king and queen paid a visit but to welcome this new princess they had to get on a plane and fly transatlantic. And then the baby's father took part in a modern royal tradition - like many new papas belonging to different monarchies around Europe, Chris O'Neill met the press. But unlike other new daddies, he could answer most questions bar one. He wasn't allowed to tell anyone his little girl's name - that will be done by the king at a cabinet meeting. But he did give the world a glimpse of a whole new royal tradition - baby's footprint on daddy's arm.

Back in Stockholm, there was more royal tradition as the birth of a new member of the royal family was greeted with a 21 gun salute by the Armed Forces. This new princess, fifth in line to the throne, is starting her life with a very royal mix of history and modernity.
