Liege commemorations - in photos

There were many royal events as part of the commemorations for the centenary of World War One - here are some of the best photos shared throughout the day.

Commemorations in Liege earlier in the day had been hosted by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde who welcomed around fifty representatives to the event.

Among the royals to attend was King Felipe VI of Spain.

The Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg was also at the event.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were greeted by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde on their arrival in Liege.

During the commemorations, King Philippe made a speech in which he talked of the responsibility of today's leaders to preserve peace. The Duke of Cambridge also made a speech in which he talked of the great suffering endured by people in Belgium during World War One. At one point in the ceremony, a young girl dressed in white curtsied to King Philippe before released a symbolic white balloon - the cue for hundreds of balloons in all the colours of the countries involved in World War One to be let free to float into the blue sky.
A wreath was laid at the end of the ceremony by King Philippe - it was made of white roses left by each guest on their arrival at the commemoration. Among those seen paying their respects were the Duke of Cambridge, King Felipe and the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

The royals then joined other dignitaries at an event at the Bishop's Palace in Liege where there was a reception and more speeches before a balcony appearance.
