A time to remember
On the centenary of the start of World War One, several of the royal houses shared photos of commemorations taking place around Europe. The Belgian Monarchy Twitter feed featured images of the event that took place in Liege on the morning of August 4th 2014 to mark one hundred years since the conflict began. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde welcomed royals from several countries as well as dignitaries and heads of state from around the world.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were present at the event and the British Monarchy You Tube official channel later posted a video of the day's commemorations.
The Spanish Royal Household Twitter account shared photos of King Felipe at the event and at the reception held at Liege Town Hall afterwards where he was seen talking with the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg who was also present.
And in the evening, there were more photos from the Belgian Monarchy Twitter feed as King Philippe and Queen Mathilde joined the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry at a remembrance ceremony at St Symphorien, near Mons, as the light began to fade.
And never to forget
The Prince of Wales attended a Commonwealth commemoration in Glasgow on August 4th 2014 at the city's cathedral and later laid a wreath at the war memorial. The image was shared on Clarence House's Instagram account.
Prince Harry was at a ceremony in Folkestone where he dedicated a memorial arch spanning the area where millions of British troops boarded boats to take them to Belgium during the war. A striking image was shared on Clarence House's Twitter account.
The Queen had been in Crathie for events while the Duchess of Cornwall extinguished the final flame at a candlelit vigil at the exact moment marking the hundred years since Britain joined World War One. The last image of the day posted on the Clarence House Twitter account was of the light that would go out to mark the beginning of the war.
Look who's back
There were several returns in the week. King Juan Carlos made his first public appearance since his abdication when he flew to Colombia to see Juan Manuel Santos take on a second term in office. The official Twitter account of Casa Real shared many images of his three day trip.
Queen Sofia also made her first public appearance since her husband abdicated and her son, Felipe VI, became king. She joined Felipe with his wife, Letizia, at an event for the authorities in Mallorca which the royals hosted at the start of their traditional summer stay on the island. The Twitter account shared several photos of the event.
And after their summer break, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark resumed royal duties with a week long visit to Greenland where they introduced their four children to more public engagements. The Danish Royal House shared several videos of events on its official You Tube Channel.
