The two worlds of William

Just hours after it was confirmed that the Duke of Cambridge is taking up a job with the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service, William was out and about representing the Queen at an event in Glasgow for the volunteers who helped make the Commonwealth Games such a huge success.  In just one day, the duke's future for the next two years was clear to see - working by day and in downtime, representing the Monarchy.

The prince's appearance at the event for the gamesmakers was a surprise.  He spent several hours talking to hundreds of the people who had worked behind the scenes at the event and told them that the games had been the 'best ever'.  The party, at Merchant Square in the city, included a speech by William who told the 1,500 guests that they had run the games with 'professionalism and great care'.  He also told them that it had meant 'an awful lot' to the Queen that the games were in safe hands as she loves the event.

The event summed up William's new life which starts in just a few weeks time.  While he will spend most of his time training to work with the Air Ambulance and, after passing his exams, working with them, he will also still represent the Queen at major events and work with his charities throughout the country.  In some ways, his new role doubles his responsibility - he must make a good job of it for himself and his colleagues but he must also maintain his public profile as a senior member of the Royal Family.  He - and the rest of us - got a taste of how it will work yesterday. The opening chapter of a story that will last two years and help shape a prince who will one day be king.
