Royal news, September 1st 2014

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden inaugurated Varjisan and Pite Alvs ecoparks which had been planned as the last of 36 such areas in the country.  However, after fires in Vastmanland there are now projects to create an ecopark on some of that land.

The king toured the parks and visited rapids before enjoying a locally produced lunch.

Queen Silvia met some of the new Silvia nurses beginning their training - they specialise in care for people with dementia.  The course lasts two years and the queen met the 41 new recruits as they started their work.

Prince Daniel handed out one of the grants which bear his name and which are handed out to promising young researchers.  This year, the recipient is Dr. Lars Maegdefessel who is working on molecular therapies to reduce the number of people affected by cardiovascular disease.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians did the first school run of the new academic year.  The queen took Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel and Princess Eleonore to class while the king dropped Prince Emmanuel off at school.


King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands was in Rotterdam where he attended the closing ceremony of events marking the centenary of the Erasmus University.

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark began another summer cruise which will see them visit several parts of the country including Ringkobing, Livo, Nykobing and Vesthimmerland.  First port of all was Thyboron.

King Harald of Norway held an audience with the Chief of Defence while Queen Sonja hosted a meeting on the role of women in culture and the media at the Royal Palace in Oslo.
