Anne of Bohemia, Queen of England was born on this day in 1366. The first consort of Richard II arrived on May 11th 1366 in Prague.
She was the daughter of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and his last wife, Elizabeth of Pomerania, and was born into one of the most powerful and influential families in Europe. Her father had risen to the position of Holy Roman Emperor and consolidated his power once there. Her mother was descended from the Kings of Poland.
Anne and her siblings were important political figures from the moments of their births because of their connections. Her marriage to Richard II in 1382 was a huge boost for the already weakened King of England and her stabilising influence was credited with calming his tempers and pausing his often chaotic attitude to power. Her death, in 1394, left him devastated and vulnerable. Within five years of losing his queen, Richard had lost his throne.
