A day of history for Sweden's royals

King Carl XVI Gustaf has been the second longest reigning monarch in modern Swedish history for several years now.  But there's something about official jubilee celebrations that seems to cement that.  The party and public celebrations in Sweden to mark his forty years on the throne have shown that the changes he brought in, his desire to modernize and his determination to move with the times have paid off.  The only king to have two queens in waiting to succeed him, the first to change the rules to give men and women equal succession rights and now a member of that elite club of monarchs with four decades on the throne under their belts.  And he said thanks to his country with a drink in his hand.  A very modern monarch.

For Sweden, with the times - King Carl Gustaf salutes wellwishers from the Royal Palace on the occasion of his 40th jubilee, September 15th 2013
