Carl XVI Gustaf's first jubilee

This isn't the first time that King Carl XVI Gustaf has taken part in a 40th jubilee in Sweden.  In 1947, when he was just twenty months old, he attended the events marking the forty year anniversary of King Gustaf V.  It was a muted celebration as King Gustaf's grandson, Carl Gustaf's father, had been killed in an aircrash earlier that year.  But there he is, in a photo published by the Swedish Royal House, staring at the camera back in 1947 while everyone else looks at another photographer.  A little boy with an unmistakeable face and lots of blond, curly hair who at that time was already marked out as a future king and who would one day lead a far more public and exuberant jubilee of his own.

Staring the future in the face - the future King of Sweden, Carl Gustaf, on the lap of his mother, Sybilla, as the family gathered for the 40th jubilee of his great grandfather, Gustaf V, in 1947
