Spain's royals at Madrid hospital

King Juan Carlos is currently undergoing an operation to put in a new hip replacement after developing an infection. And his wife and family are nearby, awaiting the results.  The king went into the Quiron hospital in Madrid around three, local time, this afternoon.  He was smiling and waved at the journalists waiting outside.  This evening, after darkness began to fall, his wife and consort arrived.  Sofia of Spain looked relaxed and was smiling broadly as she went into the hospital.

A little later their eldest child, the infanta Elena, arrived at the clinic with Prince Felipe and Letizia joining them some time afterwards.  A full update on the king's condition isn't expected until much later on this evening.

The operation was announced last Friday, less than twenty four hours after reports that the king's recovery from a previous surgical intervention wasn't going to plan.  And now, Juan Carlos is in the middle of the hardest part of his latest treatment and his family wait for the results.
