The king of football
He didn't get to present the trophy but the winners were pretty keen to show their king their spoils at the end of an epic Champions' League final. Juan Carlos and Sofia were in the royal box to watch Real Madrid make history and break the hearts of their city rivals, Atletico, with a rollercoaster 4-1 victory in Lisbon. And as soon as the cup was in their hands, the players made their way to the King of Spain to celebrate at his side.
The king is reported to be a Real fan, with Prince Felipe supporting Atletico, but the royal guests were sure of a win either way last night as two teams from the same city battled it out for the Champions' League for the first time. It makes Real Madrid the only side ever to win the title ten times and of those victories, this is the fourth in the reign of King Juan Carlos. It also means that, at the moment, a Spanish club holds the European Cup while the national team are reigning European and World champions. For one night at least, the King of Spain was the king of football.
