Royal round up, week ending February 28th 2014

A round up of all the news from Europe's royal houses for the week ending February 28th 2014...


Belgium


King Philippe spent part of his week looking at issues linked to youth employment.  On February 27th 2014, he held a workshop at the Palais des Bruxelles on training and jobs for young people.  And on February 28th the king was in Seraing in Liege where he visited Technifutur competence centre which works closely with local schools to help young people find training and jobs.

The king held several audiences in the week.  On February 24th he held his regular meeting with Prime Minster, Elio di Rupo, at the Royal Palace in Brussels.  On February 25th 2014, at the Chateau de Laeken, he welcomed the President of Haiti, Michel Martelly.  On February 26th 2014, at the Royal Palace in Brussels, he held an audience with the mayor of Brussels, Yvan Mayeur.  And on February 27th, at the Chateau de Laeken, King Philippe held a meeting with Annemie Neyts, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Belgian Agency for Foreign Trade.

On February 25th 2014, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde visited the media company, Medialaan in Vilvoorde in Brabant to mark the 25th anniversary of it being renamed.  The company has several TV stations and other media outlets.

Later in the week, Queen Mathilde was in Antwerp for a one day conference on cyber bullying which was held as part of an anti bullying week.  There was a special focus on education and prevention.

Prince Laurent represented King Philippe at the 55th BATIBOUW fair in Brussels - the event gathers exhibitors in the fields of building, renovation and decoration and is being held at the Brussels Expo.

The Netherlands


On February 25th 2014, the King and Queen of the Netherlands were joined by the country's Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague for a reception for the country's Winter Olympic 2014 medalists.

On February 28th 2014, Princess Laurentien opened a new library and knowledge facility in Gouda which has been built in a converted chocolate factory.

The king's cousin, Jaime de Bourbon, and his wife, Viktoria, showed off their first child in a series of official photos.  Zita Clara de Bourbon Parma was born on February 22nd 2014 in Amsterdam.

Sweden


Europe's other new princess made headlines in Sweden this week.  King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia returned from New York where they had flown as soon as they heard that their youngest daughter, Madeleine, had given birth to a little girl on February 20th. On February 26th 2014, the king held a special cabinet meeting at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, as is traditional, to tell ministers about the birth and announce his newest granddaughter's name and title.  He was accompanied by Crown Princess Victoria.  The fifth in line to the Swedish throne has been named HRH Princess Lilian Maria and given the title Duchess of Gotland.

The Royal Household also released the first photos of Princess Leonore.  The portraits were taken by her father, Christopher O'Neill.

On February 28th 2014 King Carl XVI Gustaf held a meeting with the chairman of the board of the King's Young Leadership Foundation at the Royal Palace in Stockholm to discuss the organisation's activities.

On February 24th 2014, Prince Carl Philip hosted a reception at the Royal Gardens in Stockholm for Sweden's Winter Olympians.  There was a large crowd there to meet the athletes who brought back fifteen medals.

Future queen regnant, Estelle of Sweden, celebrated her second birthday on February 23rd 2014 and to mark the occasion, a set of official photos were released.

Denmark


Queen Margrethe II held a public audience on February 24th 2014 at the Christianborg Palace in Copenhagen.  The queen holds regular audiences to meet a wide range of people.  Crown Prince Frederik had one engagement in the week - on February 27th 2014 he presented some sustainable environment awards at a ceremony in Copenhagen.  The ceremony recognised green achievements in building.

On February 25th 2014, Crown Princess Mary attended the premiere of a documentary on Asger Jorn, one of the events taking place to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Danish artist.  The event took place at the National Gallery of Denmark.

On the following day, the princess visited the Family House in High-Taarstrup where she met some of the women and children who it helps.  The Family House offers helps to women who are having a hard time as they raise their children.  Crown Princess Mary spent several hours talking to women and playing with some of the children as well as talking to staff about the issues they deal with.

Norway


Crown Prince Haakon Magnus acted as regent through most of the week and on February 23rd 2014, he attended a ceremony as part of the Day of Prayer being held across Norway to mark the 200th anniversary of the country's constitution.  The prince took part in a service at Oslo Cathedral.  On February 25th, he began a three day visit to St Petersburg in Russia and began his trip by opening the new offices of the Norwegian Consulate in the city.

On the following day, February 26th 2014, the Crown Prince opened a Norwegian-Russian business seminar before visiting the new production facility of Norwegian paint company, Jotun, in St Petersburg.  He went on to visit the Baltic State Technical University where he addressed students and then ended his day by meeting the Vice Governor of St Petersburg, Igor Golikov.  In the evening, Crown Prince Haakon Magnus attended at reception at the Ethnographic Museum.  On February 27th 2014, the prince ended his trip with a visit to FMC Technologies which provides solutions in subsea oil and gas production.

On his return to Norway, the prince held a Council of State at the Royal Palace in Oslo on February 28th 2014 and later the same day he held an audience with the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir George Zambellas.


Spain


The king of Spain held several audiences at the Zarzuela Palace during the week.  On February 24th 2014, King Juan Carlos met the President of Spain's Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, Carlos D. Serrano.  And on February 27th 2014, he held an audience with Ramtane Lamamra, the Foreign Minister of Algeria.

Queen Sofia began her week by visiting the National Ballet of Spain and the National Company of Dance at Naves del Matadero in Madrid on February 24th 2014.  The queen watched several rehearsals before meeting the artistic directors of the two organisations and several of the dancers.

And on February 27th 2014, the queen held an audience with members of the Technology and Health Foundation at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.

Prince Felipe of Asturias began his week by hosting an official welcome dinner for the Executive Committee of GSMA and members of the Foundation Barcelona Mobile World Capital at the Albeniz Palace in Barcelona o February 23rd 2014. It was the first event in a three day congress on global mobile communications.

On February 24th 2014, the prince attended several events linked to the congress where he was joined by the Princess of Asturias.  Prince Felipe was in Tarragona on February 26th 2014 for a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Committee organising events to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of General Juan Prim y Prats. Later that day the prince attended a conference in Madrid about the Supreme Court.  On February 28th 2014, the prince attended the lying in of guitar legend, Paco de Lucia, who died earlier in the week.  Prince Felipe paid his respects at the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid and offered his condolences to the musician's loved ones.

The Princess of Asturias visited Albacete on February 25th where she spent time at the Arcos knife factory hearing about programmes to encourage young people into work and training. She spent time with parents and students at the Secondary School and University to hear their experiences of vocational training.

On February 28th 2014, the princess made a speech at an event marking the National Day for Rare Illnesses.  The day's theme was education and teaching everyone about rare conditions.

On February 28th 2014, the Infanta Elena took part in the official send off in Madrid for the Spanish Paralymic team ahead of the Winter Games in Sochi.

United Kingdom


The Queen welcomed the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to Buckingham Palace on February 27th 2014 as the chancellor made a visit to the UK.  The Queen and the chancellor had tea - the meeting followed Angela Merkel's historic address to both houses of the British parliament.

On February 25th 2014, the Queen received the letters of credential of the ambassadors of Serbia and Namibia in an audience at Buckingham Palace.  On February 26th 2014, the Queen held an audience with Judith McGregor, the new High Commissioner to South Africa.  Elizabeth II also held one of her regular audiences with the Prime Minister, David Cameron, on the same day.  And on February 28th 2014, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Prime Minsiter at his country home, Chequers, and had lunch with him and his wife, Samantha.

The day before, February 27th 2014, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had attended a ceremony for the Queen's Anniversary Prize at Buckingham Palace. The prize recognises Higher and Further Education institutions in the UK for excellence and innovation.

On February 24th 2014, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards at the barracks in Aldershot in Hampshire.  That evening, the duke attended a dinner given by the Imperial Poona Yacht Club of which he is an honorary member.  On February 26th 2014, the Duke of Edinburgh held a reception for Book Aid International at St James' Palace - he is the charity's patron.

The Prince of Wales held an audience on February 24th 2014 with Baroness Amos, the UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, at Clarence House.  On February 26th 2014, accompanied by the Duchess of Cornwall, the prince visited the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth - Prince Charles is President of the Mary Rose Trust.  Later that day, the prince spent some time on HMS Dragon at sea.  The duchess visited the Treetops Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Portsmouth in the afternoon as well as spending time at the Role 2 Medical Facility on board HMS Illustrious.  That evening, the prince and the duchess attended a reception on board HMS Illustrious for members of the ship's company and their families.

The Prince of Wales spent some time in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire on February 28th 2014.  He began his day by visiting the 1st Queen's Dragoon Guards Castlemartin Ranges, Merrion, Pembrokeshire before moving on to Llanelli in Carmarthenshire where he spent some time at Llanelly House which has just been restorted.  He ended his day in Wales with a visit to the Town Hall in Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan.  On February 25th 2014, the Duchess of Cornwall held a reception for the charity, Barnados, at Clarence House.  She is their president.

The Countess of Wessex held a meeting at Buckingham Palace on February 26th for the Corps of Army Music - she is Colonel-in-Chief.  On February 28th 2014, the Earl and Countess of Wessex began a tour of the Caribbean as part of their work with the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.  They began their visit in Barbados.  The Princess Royal began her week by attending the English Language Awards at the House of Lords on February 25th 2014 - the princess is president of the English Speaking Union of the Commonwealth.  Later that day, the Princess Royal presented Jacques Rogge with the Insignia of an Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.  The princess also attended a reception for Riding for the Disabled, of which she is president, at the House of Commons.  In the evening, the princess attended the Quincentenary Dinner of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames at Fishmongers' Hall in London.

On February 26th 2014, Princess Anne was in Cheshire where she opened BAE Global Combat Systems Munition Facility at Crewe.  That afternoon she chaired the Cheshire Agricultural Society Annual General Meeting in Wilmslow - the princess is the president of the Cheshire County Show 2013.  On February 27th 2014, Princess Anne opened new teaching facilities at the University of London of which she is Chancellor.  In the afternoon, the princess attended the London Scottish Schools Six Nation Matches in Surrey - she is patron of the London Scottish Football Club.

The Duke of Gloucester held a series of meetings and audiences through the week at Kensington Palace for several of the charities with which he is involved.  The Duke of Kent visited the 1st Battalion the Rifles at Okehampton in Devon on February 25th 2014 -he is their Colonel-in-Chief.  And it was confirmed in the week that Princess Beatrice is now on Twitter - @yorkiebea.


Monaco


Prince Albert was in San Francisco in the week for the World Ocean Summit organised by The Economist and National Geographic magazine.  The prince made speeches and took part in several debates at the event which ran from February 24th to February 26th 2014.
