Royals on social media

It's been another busy week for the royal houses of Europe with name days, days at Downton and boys playing with boys toys. Here is how the courts of the continent told their week on their official social media channels.

Keeping with tradition

Possibly the biggest royal social media story of the week came when the Duchess of Cambridge visited the set of Downton Abbey at Ealing Studios. The duchess met cast and crew, the show's creator credited Kate with helping make the programme popular in America and the internet went crazy for the Duchess at Downton as we got a chance to see Kate in some traditional settings. Kensington Palace shared some photos on its Instagram account.

The duchess took part in another tradition earlier in the week when she joined the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other senior royals at a ceremony at Westminster Abbey for Commonwalth Day. The British Monarchy Twitter account was ready with photos for sharing.

As is traditional in Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria got lots of flowers and a musical greeting as she marked her name day in the week. Helped by Princess Estelle she greeted crowds and did a walkabout -as seen on a Vine shared by the Swedish Royal Court.

Looking back

There was a chance for royalty around Europe to take in a bit of history in the week. Clarence House shared images of the Prince of Wales viewing the Magna Carta as he opened an exhibition all about the Great Charter at the British Museum. Eight hundred years since King John signed it, the man who will one day inherit his throne saw the document that changed royal power forever and everyone else got to see it on the official Clarence House Twitter channel.

There were several engagements in the arts world during the week just gone for King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain and the official Casa Real Twitter channel shared some photos of all the visits, including one to a special exhibition marking 500 years since the birth of St Teresa of Avila.

Engineering an engagement

Boys will be boys and in the week we got to see several royal men enjoying a bit of engineering. Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark helped inaugurate a new submarine cable between their two countries with the Norwegian Royal Household sharing a photo of the event on its official Facebook page./>

King Philippe of the Belgians spent two days in Germany in the week when he got the opportunity to do as all monarchs must at some point in their reigns and don protective goggles and headgear for a photo that will keep reappearing over and over again. It was shared for the first time on the official Belgian Monarchy Twitter feed.

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands shared the spotlight in a twitpic with some of the equipment used to provide green energy which he saw when he opened BioWarmteCentrale - the image was shared on the official Dutch Royal Twitter feed.
