The art of being queen

Another day, another art gallery for the Queen of Spain. Queen Letizia, in green, spent St Patrick's Day at the Reina Sofia Art Museum in Madrid where she opened an exhibition of modern art from the Kunstmuseum in Basel. It's less than a week since Letizia was last seen at an art gallery - the image of this much photographed woman beside iconic pictures is becoming a regular event.

On March 11th, the queen accompanied her husband to an exhibition of art marking the 500th anniversary of the birth of St Teresa of Avila.  The day before that they were in Zaragoza where among several engagement they dropped into - an art gallery. This time they were visiting a display of works by Goya. But the latest trip to see more modern art isn't her first brush with this genre in recent weeks.

Less than a month ago, Queen Letizia was in Coruna with King Felipe VI where they spent some time at an exhibition of work by Picasso. And the same painter has pieces included in the latest exhibition to get a royal visit - he is one of the major artists on display, alongside Gauguin, Munch and Mondrian. It probably won't be long before we see Queen Letizia in a gallery again. The queen has certainly grown in confidence since the accession of  her husband and seems poised and relaxed in her new role. Letizia has learned there is an art to being a queen.
