Lace and Letizia

It was an easy win. The Queen of Spain and the First Lady of Colombia were out in their evening best at a gala dinner at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid this week as part of a three day visit by the Colombian President. And if Letizia had looked slightly lacklustre in comparison to her guest at the lunch held early on in the stay, when it came to the big event the new queen was ready. Both women in the spotlight went for lace but there was only one winner. The frock might have been grey but there was nothing dull about it for Queen Letizia.

Full length, Felipe Varela and matched with the floral tiara that she loves so well, Letizia looked more comfortable than ever in her new role as queen. Her guest, Maria Clemencia Rodriguez de Santos, also went for lace - hers was black with nude coloured panels underneath but with no diamonds in her hair and quite a lot of frills and flounces this was a fashion face off that only Letizia was winning.

Their first meeting had seen the women reverse colours with the queen looking rather low key in a monochrome outfit while her visitor chose grey and looked all the better for it.

After the gala dinner, there was one more encounter which saw both women choose black but in very different styles. Letizia chose a daringly short dress matched with opaque tights and dark red shoes while Maria Clemencia went for full length. It was another win for the wife of the President of Colombia but the 2-1 score doesn't matter. The look everyone remembers is from the palace where the queen dazzled - it's all about Letizia and lace.
