Queen Camilla back in the duchy whose name she shared for so long

Queen Camilla was back in Cornwall as her royal diary got well and truly under way for a new season. And she packed plenty in during a day spent in the county whose name she shared for so long.

Camilla, famously Duchess of Cornwall for 17 years from her marriage in 2005 until her husband's accession as king on September 8 2022, returned to the county for a series of engagements as her summer holidays came to an end. She stared at Shelterbox where she is patron. She visited the Truro office of the international disaster relief charity which looks after those who lose their homes through conflict, climate crisis or natural catastrophes. The Queen helped mark its 25th anniversary and unveiled a plaque which is perhaps the only way a new term of royal engagements can get properly under way.

Next, it was off to Newquay which given Cornwall's road system is easier said than done. The Queen arrived in the early afternoon and headed to Wave House Church to meet members of the Cornwall Community Foundation, another of her patronages. They help grassroots organisations and support local giving to help build stronger community relations. And there was a chance to catch up with some of those involved in the foundation - a local knitting club.

Finally, there was a reminder of the title she used for so long. On her marriage, Camilla became known as the Duchess of Cornwall. This was a mark of respect for Diana, Princess of Wales. Camilla did, of course, become Princess of Wales on her marriage but was never known as such as the title was so indelibly associated with Diana. Now Queen Camilla, she arrived at the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust where she named a new craft as ''Duke of Cornwall'', the title held by her husband for 70 years. However, it now belongs to Prince William. It is held by the heir to the throne of England. The Queen also opened the new Newman Wing operations unit as he day came to an end. Nothing like a return to your roots as you start a new chapter.
