The US First Lady might just have beaten The Queen at a game she's used to winning - ultimate hat. Melania Trump chose a striking purple hat which had enough fashion forward thinking to put it at the head of the hat stakes.
The First Lady was in grey for the start of this historic State Visit, the first time an elected politician has been given the honour of a second such trip. She went to a favourite designer, Dior - well, who doesn't love Dior? This was a version of the legendary Bar suit and worked in dark grey which added an element of warmth on a chilly autumn day. But it was the purple hat that was the real stand out and it matched her husband's tie to perfection.
Interestingly, it was also a blend of the two colours worn by Queen Camilla and the Princess of Wales. The Queen was in royal blue, Kate was in burgundy and mix those together and the result will be that shade that Melania had on her head. None of his happens by accident. Notes will have been swapped and the result was an elegant overall look between the trio.
Queen Camilla's outfit was by Fiona Clare and we've grown used to this look on her. The royal blue was worn as a regal coat dress with three quarter length sleeves. The matching hat was as huge as we've come to expect from Her Majesty and just to give it a majestic boost, she wore a diamond and sapphire brooch that Queen Mary bought from the relatives of a Russian Tsarina in the morning before switching to a regimental brooch in the afternoon for the Beating the Retreat ceremony.
The Princess of Wales went burgundy, a go to for her at the start of a State Visit. Kate chose a dress by Emilia Wickstead with a hat in the same shade by Jane Taylor. Her brooch was an heirloom that can only be worn by a Princess of Wales. It was first given to Alexandra of Denmark on her marriage to the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward, in 1861. Diana loved it and now Kate is making it her own. Her hat was the usual discreet effort we've come to expect. As true diplomats, Camilla and Kate gave the battle of the hats to the First Lady.
