The Queen chose blue, the First Lady chose yellow and put those two together and you can't not see something. Namely, the colours of the flag of Ukraine.
The choice was a striking one and reinforced by the colours chosen by two other women involved in the upper echelons of this State Banquet. The Princess of Wales was in pale gold while Tiffany Trump wore deep blue and suddenly, you really couldn't get away from it. The question is - has King Charles asked for a show of support for Ukraine?
The Royal Family has been steadfast in its support for Ukraine since the start of the war with Russia in 2022. King Charles has welcomed President Zelenskyy on several occasions. Donald Trump's most recent meeting with the President of Ukraine was cordial but his position on the end of hostilities is less clear cut. Tonight may change that. The US President has been feted like no other politician during this State Visit. As it came to a glittering moment, with the eyes of the world on it, the colours told their own story and they are one of a King who has used a global story to state a very strong position.
