The Royal 2017: those who passed away


The royal year has seen several sad passings. As the old year comes to an end, let's take a moment to those whose have gone. Here are those who left the stage in 2017...


King Michael of Romania
Died December 5th 2017


Michael, King of Romania
October 25th 1921 - December 5th 2017

Michael was twice King of Romania, ruling from July 20th 1927 until June 8th 1930 and again from September 6th 1940 until December 30th 1947 when he was forced to abdicate. He died in Switzerland after a long illness at the age of 96 and was buried in Bucharest on December 16th 2017.




Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleberg
Died March 13th 2017


Richard Casimir Karl August Robert Konstantin of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleberg
October 29th 1934 - March 13th 2017

The head of the House of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleberg, Prince Richard was married to Princess Benedikte of Denmark and a brother in law of Queen Margrethe II. He died suddenly on March 13th 2017 at Berleberg Castle and was buried on March 21st 2017 at Berleberg.

Antony, 1st Earl of Snowdon




Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon
March 7th 1930 - January 13th 2017

Antony Armstrong-Jones was the society photographer who ended up an earl. His marriage to the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret, brought London to a standstill and the Royal Family into the Swinging Sixties. He was divorced from Princess Margaret (who died in 2002) in 1978. The first Earl of Snowdon died in Kensington, London on January 13th 2017 and was succeeded to his title by his son, David. Antony, Earl of Snowdon was buried at Llanfaglen, Carmarthen on January 20th 2017.
