The King of Spain and the country's two queens have paid tribute to Pope Francis following his death in Rome. Felipe VI was accompanied by his wife and mother as he travelled to the Apostolic Nunciature to honour the Pontiff.
King Felipe, along with Queen Letizia and Queen Sofia, signed a book of condolence at the Nunciature in Madrid. The king wrote a message in which he spoke of the spiritual legacy of Francis who died on Easter Monday, just hours after greeting the faithful in St. Peter's Square.
Queen Letizia and Queen Sofia both signed the book after the king had written his message and all three then went to a small chapel where a photo of Pope Francis had been placed in front of the altar. They spent several minutes in quiet reflection there. Later, it was confirmed that King Felipe and Queen Letizia will travel to Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis which will take place on April 26th 2025.
