There's something instantly relatable about Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden's latest style decision. She turned up for a big jubilee party in a gorgeous cream coloured suit only to find herself in the middle of a hail storm. And so she did what many of us have done. Reached for the sensible shoes to match the weather.
Victoria and her husband, Prince Daniel, were in Gamleby in the south east of Sweden which is marking its 750th anniversary this year. They had been invited along for a lunch (natch) and a jubilee celebration in the middle of the old town (another must do for a jubilee visit) and the date was set for August 22nd 2025. So the future queen went cream and chose a two piece skirt suit with a short sleeved jacket and a rather pretty pleated skirt from High Street favourite H&M. And for her first engagement there, at the area's biggest employer, Saab Barracuda, she was full on royal with a pair of smart taupe heels completing the outfit.
Which was fine until she got outside where the hail was so heavy, it was clogging the end of drainpipes and the gutters were spewing out as much water as they could manage. Not even a Crown Princess as popular as Victoria (and she is popular, the most liked member of her royal family by a mile) can pull that off in heels. So the heir to the throne showed that she is always prepared and suddenly changed into a pair of trainers.
They were, admittedly, pristine so we can drop all the ideas that these are the shoes she keeps in the back of the car to run around after her children (we all do that, right?). Estelle, 13, and Oscar, 9, weren't with their parents for this day out but the sensible shoes is clearly a hangover from being a mum. Victoria and Daniel (a real hands on dad from the get go and let's all say hoorah for that) also showed that common sense rules in their royal house by adding rain macs as quickly as possible which stopped them getting completely drowned and also allowed them to carry out an extensive walkabout with the rather large crowds that had come to see them. And there, perhaps, lies the secret of their popularity. You do what you have to do to make it all about everyone else. If that means binning the heels for trainers, that's the latest royal decree and Victoria carried it off very well indeed.
