No, Queen Camilla is not in exile - it's silly season gone mad

Queen Camilla in exile? It would be funny if such a silly rumour hadn't suddenly taken on such interest. An online video suggesting The King and Queen had fallen out and Charles had now booted Camilla out has led to a surge in queries about whether Her Majesty is out on her regal ear. The answer is absolutely not.

The very idea that King Charles and Queen Camilla would split is so mad as to be laughable. The couple first fell in love over half a century ago. We all know the messy relationships that ensued and we all know that other people got hurt along the way. So quite what could come between a pair who have had every moment of their lives pored over by millions and still decided they wanted to be together is a big unknown. There is nothing, and that means nothing, that could part Charles and Camilla and the whole world watched while that was debated before. Nothing has changed.

The basis for this rumour appears to be Queen Camilla going on holiday. King Charles has been carrying out engagements in Scotland in the past weeks but his consort hasn't been with him. She's on vacay overseas - again, totally normal behaviour for these two. The King and Queen have always had separate breaks as well as joint holidays in the summer. Except this year, someone decided to turn this into a Game of Thrones.

The whisper is that the pair have parted over a heartbreak and that Camilla has been turned into a medieval queen and driven from her husband's castle in disgrace. How very antiquated. There's all kinds of salacious sensationalism involved in this story and not an iota of truth. But in the social media age, that doesn't matter. It was said in a video that went viral and that means enough people have seen around 5 seconds of it plus the headline for it to start gaining traction.

If we want to be all psychoanalytical about things, the juicy stuff is always more interesting so even if someone posts a video saying the total opposite, it's not going to be as exciting. But exciting isn't the same as accurate. And so the wild rumour gets a life of its own. Queen Camilla has been there already with media speculation - no one has more experience than her when it comes to having their private made very public. But this time round, there's literally nothing to see. However, when you have HM in front of your name, that's not relevant for some. And so summer's silly season gets very silly indeed.
