Princess Anne glitters in birthday portrait

Princess Anne is the star of a new portrait and it's been taken for a very special reason. The Princess Royal turns 75 in just a few days' time and so there's a birthday photo. And it's very sparkly.

The image for this milestone birthday was taken in the most regal of settings. Anne was photographed at Windsor Castle, just before the State Banquet for the President of France. In true practical style, that meant that the princess was already wearing a tiara so didn't need to go and find one to pop on for her close up.

The diadem in question is a rather famous one. Anne has chosen her all diamond festoon tiara, so called because the many stones in it are shaped into festoons that form a pretty and delicate arch across the head of the wearer. Anne was given this tiara in 1973 during the run up to her first marriage. She's worn it ever since.

The Princess Royal also wore her Garter star as well as the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II and of King Charles III, a rather lovely reminder of the bond between Anne, her mother and her brother but also a statement of her role within the House of Windsor. As Anne turns 75, there are plenty of commentaries about her long standing devotion to duty and her place as a truly exemplary member of the modern Monarchy.

In 75 years, she has been steadfast in her support of the Sovereign and the institution. There have been a few bumps but nothing that she hasn't smoothed out in her inimitable manner. Now, she's turning 75 with her son about to marry again and her husband of 32 years at her side. Plus, she already had a tiara on for the photo and in Anne's practical eyes, that has got to be another win.
