Yes, Princess Anne's husband really did get a royal promotion

It's been quite the summer for the off licence nearest to Gatcombe Park, home of Princess Anne. Hot on the heels of celebrations for the engagement of the Princess' son, Peter Phillips, to Harriet Sperling, came news that Mr. Anne has been given a royal promotion by her brother, King Charles. A summer of sparkle indeed for the household of the Princess Royal.

Him indoors, better known as Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, was given a very big honour indeed by his brother-in-law but it all happened in such a Princess Anne way that no one noticed until it was done and dusted. The practical Princess's attitude to life - just get on with it - was reflected in the way her husband was promoted. It was announced in the Court Circular after it was all done and before you even think of asking HRH about official photos, she's actually doing something else so thanks anyway.

Sir Tim has been bestowed with the Insignia of a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order,  (GCVO), the highest rank of this prestigious order. It is given only at the discretion of the Sovereign and recognises exceptional devotion over a period of time. It's a real recognition of the service that Sir Tim has given the Royal Family since marrying Anne in December 1992. He has never been counted as an ''official'' working member of the Firm but he carries out a wide range of duties every year and is often at the side of the Princess for major events. In fact, the most recent official image of him was taken at the State Banquet for the President of France in July at Windsor with the photo shared ahead of Anne's 75th birthday.

King Charles bestowed the honour in a private ceremony at Balmoral on August 21st 2025 with the news appearing the following day in the Court Circular. Sir Tim Laurence GCVO had no comment to make. In fact, the Royal Family said nothing out loud about this big promotion. But it speaks volumes about the high regard in which Tim is held by The King and the wider House of Windsor and underlines just how crucial Princess Anne and her family are to Charles III right now.
