A month of Queen Letizia's fashion

Spain has had a new queen for almost a whole month and in that time, the world has suddenly woken up to what a lot of royal watchers already knew - Queen Letizia is a pretty snappy dresser.  As she moved from wife of heir to global name, the focus on the queen's wardrobe has intensified with positive results all round for Letizia.  Here's an overview of what the queen wore in her first month as a monarch.

All white

If there's one colour that's really figured in Letizia's wardrobe in her first month as a queen, it's white. She chose the shade for one of the most important outfits she'll ever wear - the Felipe Varela dress debuted as her husband was proclaimed Felipe VI.

The dress became famous around the world in moments.  Worn with neutral accessories, it was embellished at the neck with coloured stones.

White was also the colour worn by the queen for her first overseas visit.  The choice of a white suit for her audience at the Vatican with Pope Francis I ended days of speculation as to whether this modern monarch would use the old tradition of privilege du blanc, the special rule which allows queens of ruling Catholic monarchies to wear white in the presence of the Pope.  She did, exercising the privilege in a simple outfit, again worn with neutral accessories.

The queen also chose white for her first evening outfit, worn to a dinner given in honour of the Spanish monarchs on their visit to Morocco on July 14th 2014.

The queen also wore white, complete with veil, for a visit to the Mausoleum of Mohammed V on July 15th 2014.

Suit-ably dressed

The new queen has shown a preference for suits in her public appearances over the last month.  At an event to mark the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Red Cross in Spain she chose a white and navy trouser suit.

Her first public appearance after the accession of her husband was at an event supporting victims of terrorism and Letizia wore a sombre, navy trouser suit for that event.

A few days later, the new monarchs met representatives of Social Solidarity organisations in the Pardo Palace in Madrid and Letizia again chose a navy and white combination for her suit.

Pale and interesting

Maybe it's the summer months, but the queen has picked several pastel outfits in her first month as a monarch.  Her first solo appearance as a queen was at the Prado Museum in Madrid where she wore a pale pink floral print dress by Hugo Boss.

Queen Letizia chose pale pink for her outfit on day two of her presentation visit to Morocco with King Felipe VI.

The Armed Forces paraded and gave a salute to King Felipe VI  not long after his proclamation and for this event, his consort was in pale cream.

Darker moments

The Queen of Spain rewore a favourite black cocktail dress for an event in Girona on June 26th 2014 - even if all eyes were on her fake bob hairstyle.

The Queen of Spain arrived in Morocco for her presentation visit wearing a dark brown skirt suit with single breasted jacket - one of her rare fashion fails in her first month as a monarch.

It was black trousers with a tweed style jacket for a visit to the Air Base in Leon with Felipe VI on July 9th 2014.

The casual queen

Letizia hasn't given up her love for a more relaxed look when the engagement suits it and early on in her reign, she went fashion forward by donning lemon cut off trousers with a white blazer for an event in Madrid where she and King Felipe handed out grants.  Add snakeskin shoes and a lemon coloured vest and you get a queen leading fashion.

Letizia loves a cardigan/ skirt combo and she hasn't shied away from the look since becoming queen.  On a visit to Valladolid she chose an orange cardigan and beige skirt with print detail as she and the king took the train.

The King and Queen of Spain held an audience at the Zarzuela Palace on July 17th 2014 and Letizia rewore a favorite pale pink cardigan combined with another of her regular choices - a flower print skirt.

Spain's new queen has been the focus of fashion watchers around the world for a month now and by the look of things, global scrutiny won't stop this consort from dressing how she pleases and pleasing plenty as she does it.  Month one of Queen Letizia is a fashion forward success.
