Royal round up, week ending July 5th 2014

A round up of all the news from Europe's royal houses for the week ending July 5th 2014...



Belgium


The Belgian Royal Family attended the wedding of Prince Amadeo, eldest son of Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz, in Rome on July 5th 2014.  Prince Amadeo married Elisabetta Maria Rosboch in a ceremony at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere - the couple announced their engagement in February.

The rest of King Philippe's week had involved a series of audiences at the Royal Palace in Brussels.  On June 30th, the king was present for the swearing in of Olivier Paasch as head of the government of the German speaking community.  On the same day, King Philippe met acting Prime Minister, Elio di Rupo.  On July 1st 2014, the king held audiences with Major General Jean-Paul Deconinck and Major General Michel Ocula and on July 3rd he met Major General Marc Thys.  On July 2nd 2014, King Philippe received the letters of credentials of the new ambassadors of Mauritania, Libya, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and the Eastern Caribbean.  On July 4th 2014, the king held a farewell audience with the outgoing ambassador of Togo.  Later the same day, King Philippe received the latest report on the possibility of forming a government in Belgium. Queen Mathilde had one engagement in the week - on July 3rd she visited a school for pupils with special needs in De Haan and met children and teachers.

Spain


The King and Queen of Spain made their first overseas visit since the proclamation - Felipe VI and Letizia went to the Vatican where they had an audience with Pope Francis I on June 30th 2014.  The queen wore white - using privilege du blanc for the first time.

On July 1st 2014, the monarchs took the train to Valladolid where they presented the National Innovation and Design Awards.

On July 2nd 2014, King Felipe and Queen Letizia presented the Iberdrola Foundation grants at a ceremony in Madrid.

On July 3rd 2014, King Felipe was at the National Library in Madrid where he opened an exhibition called 'Designing America' about the role of Spanish experts in the construction of major cities and buildings in the US.  On the same day, the king held an audience at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid with the European Australian Business Council.

On July 4th 2014, King Felipe was in Zaragoza oversee a ceremony for the appointment of military officers.

Queen Letizia attended a ceremony in Madrid on July 4th marking the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Spanish Red Cross.

Netherlands


King Willem-Alexander began his week at the Westerkerk in Amsterdam where he attended the premiere of a concert called 'There rode a train to Sobibor' telling the story of 93 year old Jules Haddock who was the only survivor of the transportation of Jewish people from Amsterdam to Sobibor by the Nazis in World War Two.  Concerts were also held in Berlin and Lublin to symbolise the journey.

On July 1st 2014, the king received the official resignation of the Chancellor of the House and oversaw the appointment of his successor.  On July 2nd 2014, King Willem-Alexander held a working meeting with staff at the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam - he is patron of the organisation.  Later the same day, the king received the letters of credentials of the new ambassadors of Belarus, Papua New Guinea and Chile at audiences at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague.

Also on July 2nd 2014, King Willem-Alexander attended an event marking the 100th anniversary of the Shell Technology Centre in Amsterdam.

On July 3rd 2014, the king opened a new music venue, the Tivoli Vredenburg, in Utrecht.  The new venue includes five halls for different types of music.  On July 5th 2014, the king attended celebrations in The Hague for the 150th anniversary of trams in the city.

Queen Maxima visited India between June 30th and July 2nd in her role as a special advocate of the UN Secretary-General for Inclusive Finance.  During her visit, the queen met the Indian Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley.

The queen also held meetings with representatives of financial institutions, with the directors of the Bankers Association and the World Bank Group and met the governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Queen Maxima held discussions with partners of the central bank and made a speech at the bank.  On another part of her trip, the queen visited Sawda Ghevra where she heard about a drinking water project and tried out one of the water ATMs.

Sweden


Prince Carl Philip and his fiancee, Sofia Hellqvist, issued a message of thanks for all the congratulations that were sent to them after the announcement of their engagement on June 27th 2014.

Denmark


The Queen of Denmark and the Prince Consort, Prince Henrik, moved their court to the Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus for the summer on July 1st 2014.  The royal couple arrived by yacht and were greeted by local authorities.

The Crown Prince and Princess were also in festival mood as they attended Denmark's biggest music festival at Roskilde on July 3rd 2014.  It was Princess Mary's first visit to the event and the couple said they were hoping to see the Rolling Stones.

Earlier in the week, on June 28th 2014, Crown Prince Frederik had attended the Speedway Grand Prix in Copenhagen.

It was announced in the week that Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, with their children Henrik and Athena, will be moving to Copenhagen.  The family have been living in the Shackenborg Palace in south Jutland - the prince's home for twenty years - but have decided to hand the palace over to a foundation that will maintain the estate.



United Kingdom


The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh spent the week in Scotland, at Holyroodhouse, the monarch's official residence in the country. The royal couple arrived there on June 30th 2014.

On the morning of July 1st 2014, at Holyroodhouse, the Queen held several audiences including a meeting with the First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond.  The Duke of Edinburgh was at the New Club on Princes Street in the city to unveil a new stained glass window before visiting the City of Edinburgh Universities Training Corps.  Later, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh held an Afternoon Party in the gardens of Holyroodhouse.

On July 2nd 2014, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were in Glasgow visiting several venues linked to the upcoming Commonwealth Games.  The royal couple visited the Uniform and Accreditation Centre and met volunteers and games makers.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh also visited the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and saw some of the Scottish cycling team in action.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh then attended a lunch given in their honour by the Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Glasgow.  In the afternoon, they travelled to Dumfries House in Cumnock where they were met by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall - known in Scotland as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.  The prince has overseen restoration work to save the house for the nation and he and the Queen toured the Belling Hospitality Centre while the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Rothesay met stonemasonry and woodwork students at the Traditional Skills Training Centre. The four royals then toured the Queen Elizabeth Gardens at Dumfries House before the Queen unveiled a sundial.  They then attended a reception at the house in their honour.

On July 3rd 2014, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh - accompanied by the Earl of Strathearn and the Princess Royal - attended the ceremony of the Order of the Thistle at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh later visited Edinburgh Castle where they inspected a Guard of Honour by the Highlanders, 4th Batallion the Royal Regiment of Scotland and attended a commemoration service at the Scottish National War Memorial.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh unveiled a Commemoration Stone in the Memorial Garden to mark the centenary of the start of World War One.  Later, the Duke of Edinburgh held a reception for young people who have attained the Gold Standard in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

On July 4th 2014, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Forth Road Bridge to mark its fiftieth anniversary.  The Queen named the UK's biggest ever warship at a ceremony at Rosyth Dockyard. The ship, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, was launched with a bottle of malt whiskey by the Queen.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall spent several days in Wales.  On June 30th 2014, the prince visited Cnwd Foods in Carmarthenshire before visiting the Campaign for Wool of which he is patron.  The prince also visited Caws Cenarth Cheese in Carmarthenshire and in the evening, accompanied by the Duchess of Cornwall, he hosted a reception for charities and voluntary groups.

On July 1st 2014, the prince and the duchess visited St Illtud's Church in Llantwit Major and later carried out an engagement at Dyffryn Gardens in the Vale of Glamorgan.  The Prince of Wales went on to visit the Sony UK Technology Centre in Pencoed while the Duchess of Cornwall visited the Welsh National War Memorial as part of a campaign to stamp out thefts from war memorials around the UK.

The duchess later visited the research facility at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff in her role as patron of Arthritis Research UK.  In the evening, the prince and the duchess gave a reception for the Dylan Thomas 100 Festival of which Prince Charles is patron.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall travelled from Wales to Scotland on July 2nd 2014 for a reception for donors and supporters of Dumfries House in Aberdeenshire.  The Queen opened a garden there named after her and saw the work led by her eldest son who has supported the restoration of the house for the nation over several years.

On July 3rd 2014, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the Welsh National Mining Memorial at Senghenydd and then opened the Aber Valley Heritage Museum in the town.

The prince went on to visit the Llwyn Celyn Farmstead in Monmouthshire and Welsh Farmhouse Apple Juice in Crickhowell.  Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cornwall visited Usk in Bloom in Monmouthshire to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Britain in Bloom contest.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with Prince Harry, started the Tour de France which began in Yorkshire this year.  On July 5th 2014, the royals were at Harewood House to cut the ribbon to launch Stage One.

The royals then visited West Tanfield - one of the villages on the route - before heading to the end of Stage One in Harrogate where the Duchess of Cambridge presented Markus Kittel with the yellow jersey.

Earlier in the week, on June 30th 2014, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had paid an unannounced visit to the Place2Be conference on mental health which took place in London.  The next day, July 1st 2014, the duchess visited Blessed Sacrament Primary School in London to see the work of the MPact Programme for children who have parents with addictions.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended Wimbledon on July 2nd 2014 where, from the Royal Box on Centre Court, they watched Andy Murray lose in the quarter finals to Grigo Dimitrov.  On July 3rd 2014, the duke was in Scotland where he is known as the Earl of Strathearn, to attend the Order of the Thistle ceremony.

The Duke of York visited the Royal Highland Fusiliers in Midlothian on July 3rd 2014 - he is their Royal Colonel.  In the afternoon, the duke was in London where he attended a reception for the Inspiring Digital Enterprise Awards at the Barbican.  In the evening, Prince Andrew attended a garden party at the Honouarable Society of Lincoln's Inn - he is a Royal Bencher.  The duke's two daughters had a high profile in the week, starting with the Serpentine Gallery summer party in London which both princesses attended on July 1st 2014.

On the same day, Princess Eugenie was in the Royal Box at Wimbledon to see her namesake, Eugenie Bouchard, in the Women's Singles Final.  The Canadian tennis player, who lost to Petra Kvitova in straight sets, was named after the princess and has a twin called Beatrice.

The Earl of Wessex visited the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester on June 30th 2014 - he is their patron.  The earl later visited Chetham's School of Music in the city and went on to open the Woodview Centre and Wigan and Leigh Hospice in Hindley.  On July 1st 2014, Prince Edward presented degrees at Bath Abbey in his role as Chancellor of the University of Bath.  Later the same day, he attended a reception for the university in Bath and then the Chancellor's Dinner at the famous Pump Room in Bath.  The earl presented degrees at Bath Abbey on July 2nd 2014 as well.  On July 3rd 2014, he attended two events with the Worshipful Company of Gardeners of which he is Master.

The Countess of Wessex opened the Children's Cardiology Unit at Leed's Children's Hospital on July 2nd 2014 - she is its patron.  The countess went on to visit the Caring for Life organisation in Cookridge, West Yorkshire that afternoon.

The Princess Royal attended a garden party in Thatcham on July 1st 2014 marking the tenth anniversary of the West Berkshire Community Trust Hospital.  Later the princess was in Egham, Surrey for the International Colloquium on Working Equids in her role as President of World Horse Welfare.  On July 2nd 2014, Princess Anne held several audiences at Buckingham Palace and also visited St Katharine's Dock in London for the Eightieth Anniversary of Gordonstoun School.  In the afternoon, the princess held a reception at Buckingham Palace for Riders for Health, of which she is patron.  In the evening, the Princess Royal attended the Annual Awards Dinner for the Royal Academy of Engineering in London.  On July 3rd 2014, Princess Anne attended the ceremony of the Order of the Thistle in Edinburgh before visiting Leeds to open the Motor Neurone Disease Wheelchair Service at Seacroft Hospital.

Norway


Queen Sonja of Norway celebrated her 77th birthday on July 4th 2014 with the Royal Household releasing a portrait of the queen from 1970 to mark the occasion.  Earlier in the week, on June 20th 2014, Queen Sonja had been in Troms for a ceremony marking the restoration of Helgoy church and its 125th anniversary.

Monaco


Prince Albert II of Monaco visited Chile in the week. On June 30th, the prince held an audience with the country's president, Michele Bachelet, in Valparaiso.

The prince also visited the military base at Vina del Mar which is near to Valparaiso.

On July 4th 2014, the prince was in Brazil to watch the quarter final of the World Cup between France and Germany which the German team won 1-0.
