Ration books and a princess with a plan: the wedding dress of Elizabeth II

What happens when you put together ration books, a row about silk worms and a 15th century Italian masterpiece? Why, one of the most famous royal wedding dresses of all, that's what. The wedding dress of Elizabeth II was always going to be an historic event but the input of the then princess with a plan ensured it became an all time classic.

The kings, queens, princes and princesses who signed a very historic document

Your average marriage certificate has two witnesses. Sometimes there are four, you might creep up to five or six but when you're a queen in waiting and your wedding is the promise of guaranteeing a royal dynasty, things are somewhat different.

The law requires two witnesses, who can hear and understand what is being said, to sign the register. If the couple try to deny the marriage later, they could be called on in court to verify what they heard take place.

The queen who watched silently as her hopes for a throne were fulfilled

Norman Hartnell made a lot of frocks for the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten on November 20th 1947. But while he was no doubt sweating over making the bride's gown perfect and ensuring that her mum looked marvellous in another of his creations, the outfit that may have caused most fear was the one he made for Queen Mary. The Queen's granny was nothing if not formidable. Furthermore, just a decade before she had played a crucial part in securing the Monarchy when her eldest son, Edward VIII, abdicated. The bride was the hope for a throne that Mary had battled to protect. So this was no easy commission. Here's how Hartnell helped create the perfect granny of the bride....

Farewell to Beth, the rescue dog who had an integral role at the Coronation of a Queen of England

She was a rescue dog who only hoped for a good home and she ended up becoming the symbol of the reign of a Queen of England. Farewell to Beth, the little terrier who loved Queen Camilla and who has just taken her final bow.

Windsor Castle estate hit by burglars close to home of Prince and Princess of Wales

Burglars have raided part of the Windsor Castle estate, close to the home of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The couple, and their three children, were asleep at Adelaide Cottage when thieves breached the walls of the estate.

The unknown man who briefly kept a secret for a Queen of England

He was among the only people outside a royal inner circle who knew the answer to a question everyone was asking and on a chilly winter's day he, briefly, became rather famous for that very reason. And given that the person who shared that secret with him was the always formidable Prince Philip, it's perhaps little wonder that he kept it. That's a very good reason to stay quiet.

The royal wartime heroines who inspired the names of two future queens

Queen Consorts of England might have been expected to name the first few of their children after family members, but the younger children often provided a chance to use names belonging to those that inspired their parents.  And that's a trend that's been picked up by some of Europe's younger royals. A quick look at the names chosen by royal heirs for princesses who will grow up to be queen provides some interesting links to recent history.  Two of the junior princesses who will one day wear their country's crowns have names belonging to royal relatives whose reputations were shaped by World War One and World War Two.

The Queen of England who raised a smile about her own funeral plans

She was known for her mischievous sense of humour and even in her final days, Elizabeth II was raising chuckles in the most unlikely of circumstances.

Queen Camilla to miss Remembrance

The Queen will not attend Remembrance events this weekend after doctors advised her to continue to rest after she contracted a chest infection.

The romantic story of a famous Lover's Knot Tiara

The Princess of Wales in the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara in July 2017

It's based on a gift of love so it's rather appropriate that this tiara has such a romantic name. The Lover's Knot Tiara, now the go to diadem of the Princess of Wales, links this future queen to one past and plenty of other royal women in between. This diadem has a long royal history but in recent times it was closely associated with two women who have been Princess of Wales - Diana and Catherine.

A question mark over The Queen's health on important weekend

Queen Camilla may have to miss the Remembrance commemorations as she continues to recover from a chest infection. The Queen has already had to cancel several engagements after becoming ill and as Buckingham Palace announced who would be attending the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, it was confirmed that Her Majesty is still waiting to see if she is well enough.

What the Queen Mother wore to Queen Elizabeth's wedding

All eyes might be on the bride on her big day but there's one other person feeling the style pressure. The mother of the bride. Not only is she seeing her little girl begin a whole new chapter of her life, she's got to have a hat that could stop traffic or no one is going home truly happy. That was never going to be a problem at the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II on November 20th 1947. We all know how her mum loved a hat. And on the day her dynasty made more history, this Queen Elizabeth was more than ready for her close up.

The Duchess of Gloucester takes on important role for Queen Camilla

The Duchess of Gloucester has led royal commemorations at the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey. For almost a century, simple wooden crosses bearing a single poppy each have been planted at the church to remember those lost in conflict. It's an important royal tribute at the start of the period of Remembrance.

Queen Camilla takes flag dressing to new heights on her visit to Australia

I do love a bit of flag dressing. It's that strange style habit that really only applies to royals and top class sports stars competing on a world stage. It's something you do if you're about to attempt global glory for your nation on the track or if you're arriving in a capital for an official visit. As it's Olympic year, there have been plenty of chances to literally fly the flag but Queen Camilla has a strong claim to the best flag dressing game of 2024.

Why doesn't this royal event look just, well, more glamourous?

It's that time of year again. The sun is starting to set a little later, the birds are getting up a bit earlier (5am here this morning which is excessive in March) and the royal calendar heads into annual events territory. Yes, mid March means Cheltenham and, once more, these days at the racing are proving, well, slightly dowdy.

One of the world's prettiest tiaras, end of

Let's start with the star tiara of this month's birthstone. Right now, say royal and aquamarines in close proximity and someone will say Princess Madeleine. The Aquamarine Kokoshnik that the sixth in line to the throne of Sweden has made her go to is among the most photographed diadems of recent years. But the sparkler actually belongs to her auntie and is one of two aquamarine tiaras that call the Swedish royal jewellery box home. To start off Aquamarines for March, we're off to Sweden.

Time to lay off Kate

OK everyone, you've had your fun. Time to move along. If only it were that simple. But the past few days have shown a side of royal life that few would covet. The Princess of Wales has been the subject of a social media pile on that's turned into  a global controversy that makes little sense. And just when you think the craziness is finished, it ramps up again to something even more ludicrous than before. And through it all, the actual human being at its centre seems to be forgotten. It's time to lay off Kate.

The Victorian royal March brides

March royal brides are now rare but go back just a few decades and that's not the case. In particular, Queen Victoria's children were rather partial to a March wedding. Among her nine children are three who wed in this blowy, showy month that bridges winter and spring and that means a hat trick of Victorian March Royal Brides.....

The March birthdays of the House of Windsor

The House of Windsor has a hat trick of high profile royal babies who arrived in March among its current members. And the good news is that they all celebrate towards the middle or end of the month so you've got plenty of time yet to get the post. While you pick out patterns and think of jolly messages, here's a look at the House of Windsor's March royal babies.....

Aquamarines for March

Remember that knockout tiara from what would be the last State Visit that Prince Philip had a real involvement with? And we're not talking La Buena here? While Queen Letizia brought all the glitz to the 2017 trip with the Spanish Royal Family's most famous diadem that can trace its history back all the way to the start of the 20th century, Queen Elizabeth II brought out a very modern addition to her own collection, all featuring a stone traditionally associated with March birthdays. And it's not the only set of that stone in the House of Windsor's vast jewel collection. Here come the aquamarines....

Queens of England: past, present and future
