The balcony appearance of King Felipe

After the proclamation, the speech and the open top car ride, King Felipe VI of Spain had another duty to perform.  He led the royal family on to the balcony of the Royal Palace to greet his fellow citizens.

The new king looked visibly nervous as he waited to go onto the balcony and held his wife's hand tightly.  But protocol demanded she left him at the door and Felipe VI stepped out on his own for the first acknowledgement.

As soon as his wife joined him, Felipe put his arm around her waist and the two held on to one another for much of the balcony appearance.  There was kisses as well as their daughters joined them.

There were first waves from Leonor and Sofia, standing on boxes to help them see and be seen.  And then King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia joined the party.

King Felipe made sure he went straight to his father, King Juan Carlos, to offer a hug and warm wishes and Queen Letizia followed suit.

And then King Juan Carlos received a kiss and a hug from his consort, Sofia, who embraced her husband before acknowledging the crowds.  The outgoing monarchs then left the new royal family to acknowledge the cheers.

There were more waves and more photos and then Letizia and her daughters left the new king by himself once more.  But now, his first balcony appearance as king almost done, Felipe looked calm and as if the nerves had gone.  The new king had assumed his role.
