King Juan Carlos abdicates

The King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, has abdicated.  The king, now 76, steps aside in favour of his only son, Felipe, who will be proclaimed monarch in his place.

The end of an era - King Juan Carlos is abdicating

King Juan Carlos took the throne in 1975 on the death of Franco and helped bring democracy to his country.  His reign is unparalleled in Spain and in modern Europe and he has been a hero to many.  But the last years of his reign have been crippled by controversy and the country's Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has said that the time for change is now right.  But for many who remember Juan Carlos' bravery, dignity and determination to make his country a modern democracy, this is a sad day indeed.
