Letizia's first look of 2016

The Queen of Spain's fashion statement for the year usually starts with the Pascua Militar in Madrid on January 6th and if this appearance by Queen Letizia is anything to go by, 2016 is all about getting down to business. The Spanish consort came about as close as you can to making formal wear look like an office suit as she made her style debut for 2016.

At first glance it seemed that Letizia had gone for a plain white jacket and black dress combo. It was only as the full outfit was revealed that we got a bit of glamour with a very traditional looking lace trim to the long fitted skirt.

This one perhaps looked better in motion - as Letizia walked across the courtyard of the Royal Palace in Madrid for the traditional military ceremony, the skirt revealed a slit at the back which gave it a strong silhouette.  But it was still about as low key as a gala look can get.

The event always includes a speech by the king - this year, Felipe spoke about the importance of remaining unified in the face of terrorism. And it comes at a difficult political time for Spain - the current Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, is currently involved in negotiations as his party and several others battle it out to form an administration following the recent general elections that left no one group with overall power.

So it's not really a surprise that the whole thing had a very official air about it. But was Letizia's look too low key?
