Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene at the Vatican

Prince Albert II of Monaco and Princess Charlene visited the Vatican on January 18th for an audience with Pope Francis. And there were no surprises when Charlene wore white - privilege du blanc.

Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, seen in an archive photo, visited the Vatican

The royal couple arrived at the Vatican for a short formal visit which included a private audience with the Pope.

They posed for photos next to Pope Francis before holding talks away from the cameras.  There was also the traditional presentation of gifts during the short stay.

It's the third time in just over a year that we've seen a royal lady use privilege du blanc - in 2015, Queen Mathilde of the Belgians wore white for her audience with Pope Francis.

And in 2014, for one of her first overseas visits after her husband became king, Queen Letizia wore all white for her audience with the Pope.

The privilege of wearing white while meeting the Pope belongs to just a handful of queens and princesses from Catholic monarchies.
