The Royal Wardrobe: starting a new year

It's been a quiet start to the New Year for the royals but there have been a handful of engagements to keep us all on our toes and a smattering of style choices to keep us all chattering. And the Royal Wardrobe this week had all the elements you'd expect - we got tiaras, we got hats, we got dresses, we got sequins - what 's not to like? Here is a rundown of the Royal Wardrobe as 2016 makes its debut.

Twinkle, twinkle, fashion star - Crown Princess Mary of Denmark dazzles at the New Year Levee on New Year's Day. Velvet, sequins, sparkle, that ruby tiara. Again. First royal outfit of the year and the chase is on.

Mary went for simplicity for her second New Year gala gown and the all white affair with pink belt was another winner. Although she almost lost out of Queen Margrethe's rather striking navy blue ensemble which was a striking choice.

Blue was definitely the colour in Denmark this New Year as Queen Margrethe wore the same dress the following day for the final reception while Mary turned up in a stunning sapphire gown with matching velvet cape. Three wins in a row for Denmark's Crown Princess - other royals, take note, she means business.

The blue theme had been started by Denmark's queen who stepped out alongside her husband just hours after announcing his retirement in a fairytale pale azure gown that sparkled alongside her diamond tiara.

Princess Marie, meanwhile, played it safe in white and looked - dare we say it - ever so slightly underwhelming. She clearly didn't get the memo about blue.

Queen Maxima had a monochrome moment when she stepped out for her first engagement of 2016 but it was a moment worth savouring. Her black and white dress, cape and hat were all stunners.

There was another great look from Maxima the following day when she joined her husband for a welcome session marking the Netherlands taking over the rotating presidency of the European Union. Alongside politicians, the Dutch queen went for simple and chic and the bronze outfit ticked all those boxes and a few more. Put on the repeat list right now.

Queen Letizia also went for black and white for her first outfit of 2016 but the result was less impressive. For the traditional Pascua Militar in Madrid, which requires full length, she chose a black lace edged dress which might look stunning by itself but mixed with a very businesslike white jacket made the queen look like she'd got lost on her way to the office.

For a series of audiences at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid later in the week, Letizia went for black trousers and what appeared to be a rather striking red print top that we've not seen before. The only problem was we didn't get to see too much of it this time round because she inexplicably added her Zara cape to the outfit and just made it look odd. The year is young, this style icon of a queen will recover.

Maybe there is a new rule in royal dressing that queens consort must start the year in black and white because we got the hattrick when Mathilde of the Belgians stepped out for her New Year reception in a white dress with black floral print. It's not the best of the dresses we saw this week but it's not the worst and was rather chic in its own way.

The Belgian queen was in blue for her second appearance of the week with a blue top and black trouser combo that we've seen  before and we'll see again but elegant nonetheless.

Queen Rania of Jordan had a striking message for David Cameron when she visited the Prime Minister at Downing Street to discuss the approach to the humanitarian crisis facing Syrian refugees as well as education for those who are forced to leave their homes.
