Diana's Dresses: Classic from Cannes

Diana's dresses come with lots of tags. Fairytale, iconic, timeless. But also attached to them are notions of dreams. When people talk about Diana's clothes, they talk about what makes someone seem royal, of frocks that young girls want to wear when they grow up and outfits that sum up being a princess.  This is the princess dress I dreamed of wearing when I was a youngster.  Here's a look back at the all time classic that is Diana's Cannes dress.

Diana wore this outfit to Cannes in 1987. Yep, we've got early summer sun and all the glamour of one of the world's most famous film festivals just for starters. And then Diana got out of her car wearing this ethereal gown. Palest blue in layers of shimmering chiffon with a crossover waist, all sparkling in the light of a Cannes evening. It was magic.

The Catherine Walker dress is said to have been inspired by that other royal superstar who owned Cannes, Grace Kelly. The two met with Grace offering Diana support at one of her earliest public engagements and the new Princess of Wales attended the funeral of the Princess of Monaco following her early death in 1982.  There are perhaps too many sad parallels between Diana and Grace so let's focus on the positive. This dress remains one of Diana's stand out looks, a moment when she looked every inch the perfect princess. It's simple, classic, timeless and yet refreshingly stand out. Diana summed up in one gown. I still love it now.
