Marie opens the door on a new decade

Princess Marie of Denmark turns 40 today and to mark her special birthday, the Royal Household has published a series of photos which show her opening the door on a new decade.

Marie of Denmark was born in Paris on February 6th 1976

The collection of photos include formal portraits of the princess taken for a newspaper interview with Jyllands Posten and less formal, family images recently published in Hola magazine to mark her 40th. Among them is a new group snap of Marie with her husband, Joachim, and their children, Henrik and Athina.

Princess Marie gave interviews to both publications to mark her 40th birthday. In her chat with Hola magazine she says that becoming a princess was a challenge while her husband tells the magazine that Marie is great at understanding other people's points of view and that she is very popular. And they talk about how they first met back in 2002 and chat about their new home in Copenhagen.

Her other interview in Danish newspaper, Jyllands Posten, made more headlines as she said that she wasn't waiting around for some prince to marry her and that she had a great life before meeting Joachim. She told the paper that she fell in love with the prince but had serious reservations about becoming a royal, saying ''I simply was not ready to get married and take on the responsibililty it would be to become part of the royal family.''

But she is clearly used to her new role now, telling the paper that ''Prince Joachim has been so understanding and patient in helping me appreciate where we are. I've come to understand his position and how important the royal family is for Danes.''  And as she steps into a new decade, it's clear that her life as a mother, wife and princess is more important to her than ever.
