The Royal Wardrobe: dark and meaningful

February is well and truly under way and the grey skies of winter are bringing out the dark parts of the Royal Wardrobe. This week, we've had black, we've had dark blue and we've had a bit more black again. It's all been dark but very meaningful - here are five of the best looks from the week just gone.

Crown Princess Victoria picked an unusual but eye catching evening dress in navy for one of her last appearances before the birth of her second child, due in March

There was no getting away from her baby bump which looked fabulous in the textured gown which featured lace sleeves and contrasting fabrics. Not quite as amazing as her sister-in-law, Sofia's, maternity evening look a few weeks ago but pretty impressive nonetheless

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway chose a black boucle skirt suit for an engagement in the week and scored a big fashion hit in the process. It was chic, elegant and on trend even if the princess did fall foul of that always tricky winter combo - opaque tights and shoes. Her heels were slightly too shiny and slightly too low to make this a total winner but it was a great look nonetheless

The Duchess of Cambridge rewore a suit in a similar style as she appeared in a video to mark Children's Mental Health Week. Kate, speaking to school children about how they coped with emotional issues, chose a navy skirt and jacket that screams elegance. A winner from the duchess as she cranks up her engagements for 2016

The Queen chose very dark grey and black as she got her new year well and truly under way by returning from Sandringham to London. For her train trip back to Buckingham Palace she wore a coat and headscarf that epitomised the winter weather while looking rather chic all the same

Crown Princess Mary also chose black for one of her appearances this week, going for a trouser suit with lacy blouse as she and Crown Prince Frederik headed to the Danish telethon for 2016. Their Fund donated 25,000 kroner and the Crown Princess turned plenty of heads in her combo.
