It's not just a surprise, it's been a shock. The decision of
The Sun to publish previously unseen images of The Queen, as a child, performing a Nazi salute while playing with her uncle, mother and sister at Birkall has been the main topic of royal debate this weekend. The image on the front page of the paper on Saturday was of the seven year old, then Princess Elizabeth of York, doing the salute. It turned out the story was about how her uncle, the future Edward VIII, seemed to be encouraging his family to play along and there was debate inside about whether he had had Nazi sympathies.

But was it right - or fair - to headline a story about the political beliefs of her uncle with an image of The Queen as a child playing along with a game she may not even have understood at a time when the true horrors of the Nazi regime were still to be revealed. That's the question on the latest poll - it closes on Wednesday.
