The Royal Wardrobe

Things are getting quiet and summery on the Royal Wardrobe front. With holidays starting there aren't as many outfits on show and those we've seen this week have had a distinctly laid back feel to them. Here are the outfits of the week starting with a striking white Tommy Hilfiger dress chosen by Princess Charlene of Monaco for the start of the celebrations marking her husband's decade on the throne.

Sunny, glamourous and very, very chic it looked just as good from every side with a back detailing that turned it from fine to fab.

The sisters who stood alongside Albert ten years ago as he became a sovereign were also at the event. Princess Caroline chose white as well in a classy ensemble that held its shape and style even when she was juggling her two year old grandson, Sacha.

Her daughter in law, Tatiana, chose a bright pink floral print dress while Caroline's sister, Stephanie, went for a beige print dress with flounces and flares on the skirt.

White was also the order of the day for Queen Letizia of Spain who chose a striking two piece skirt outfit for the official welcome for the President of Peru and his wife who were making a State Visit beginning in Madrid.

She swapped this elegant outfit for a more run of the mill blouse and skirt ahead of the welcome lunch given alongside King Felipe. Less glamourous queen, more chic office worker.

But the dress chosen for the evening State Dinner was a real showstopper. The full skirted midnight blue evening dress worn with the Floral Tiara was about as good as it gets for this kind of event and left her guests in the shade.

Which was lucky for Letizia as he next evening outfit did a big old miss. The black cocktail dress with sheer back has been out of the Royal Wardrobe before but for this event, a reception offered by her guests at the end of their visit, it didn't shine. With nearly every part of the event meaning the queen couldn't show off her back, the stunning part of this frock stayed hidden and the overall effect was drab.

We got another repeat at the end of the week for a grants ceremony and a visit to a TV channel. As we'd expect from Letizia it was very on trend - her beige leather dress with snakeskin shoes is about as hot as it gets right now.

No problems with colour for Queen Maxima who wore a hat only she could get away with made of mid red coloured straw and minus a crown matched to a mauve dress. The event, supporting people with eating disorders, was bathed in sunshine and the bright clothes of the queen were perfectly chosen.

There was also a burst of green for the queen in the week as she headed to the opening of a new nursing centre. The sleeveless dress and wraparound hat had a real feel of summer.

Which is perhaps why Maxima's choice of summer beach outfit for her holidays photocall was such a surprise. She strode along the sand in black trousers and a very sombre looking monochrome top - totally out of character for the queen and the event.

Queen Mathilde of the Belgians was also on summer holiday call this week, taking a day out at the zoo with her husband and four children. She chose a Mathilde maroon top and print trouser combo that easily won on the queens on holiday front.

Earlier in the week, Mathilde had attended a ceremony marking the 30,000th time that the Last Post has been sounded at the Menin Gate. She laid a wreath in memory of those killed in World War One. The outfit was a very suitable beige print dress with black accessories.

There was another very suitable outfit on display as the Queen reviewed the Yeoman of the Guard in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. A simple ice blue suit with matching hat looked ice cool in the hot weather of a London afternoon.

And no one does bright colours so everyone can see better than the Queen - there was a perfect example on display at the end of the week as she stepped onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace in a vibrant yellow dress with pink hat for a flypast to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The Countess of Wessex chose white for the same occasion with a very striking pale green straw hat - she's learning from her mother in law to make sure she can been seen at the big events. Meanwhile, Princess Alexandra chose a pale version of airforce blue and ended up matching all the men on the balcony.

Sophie Wessex rewore a pale stretch dress with pleated skirt for a trip to the Centre Court at Wimbledon on Wednesday. It's a great look but no one really cared because Kate was there in a bright red dress with new haircut.

The Countess of Wessex chose a striking black and white ensemble for a visit to the Jigsaw Trust in the week. Add in a snakeskin clutch and you have a close runner up for best outfit of the week in the Royal Wardrobe.

From Charlene to Sophie it's been a week where white won.
