Royals on social media

There was a distinct feel of summer about the official royal social media accounts this week. There were holidays, annual July tours and plenty of sunshine as well as a focus on the next generation. Here's what the royals shared about themselves this week.

Animal friends

The Dutch Royal Family took part in their annual summer holiday call with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima and their daughters posing on the beach with their family pets. Plenty of photos showing what they saw - banks of photographers - were shared on the official Facebook page as was this image of future queen, Princess Catharina Amalia, Princess of Orange, playing with her pet.

The Belgian Royal Family also enjoyed a family day out this week, visiting the PairiDaza park where they met pandas and elephants with lots of photos shared on the official Twitter account.

The Princess Royal officially inaugurated the Kelpies in the week - a series of sculptures which pays tribute to the work done by horses on Scottish canals. A striking image of the princess by one of the huge pieces of public art was shared on the Twitter feed of Falkirk Council and retweeted by the official British Monarchy account.

The next generation

In case you missed it, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge was christened at the weekend. Kensington Palace led the way in tweeting images, as you would expect, and just when we'd recovered from the unofficial snaps on Thursday we got the official portraits - taken by Mario Testino. Four images went out on Twitter and Instragram, including this now famous one of Charlotte in the arms of her mother, Kate.

Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway took part in a conference in the week about bringing education to the millions of children around the world who don't get the chance to learn - for many different reasons. Images of the event were shared on the official Twitter and Facebook pages of the Norwegian Royal Family including this image of the prince with Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain presented the Iberdrola grants in the week, aimed at helping young professionals working in the field of energy. A video of the event, including a speech by the king, was shared on the official You Tube channel, Casa Real TV.

A summer of sport

Summer wouldn't be summer without a spot of sport and royals across the continent got involved in some of the most famous events around. The King of the Netherlands was snapped talking to competitors and support staff and the images were shared on the official Facebook page.

The Tour also hit Belgium at its beginning and King Philippe starred in a series of images at the start of the stage in Seraing including some with the legendary Belgian cycliste, Eddy Merckx.

Meanwhile, during his week in Wales Prince Charles met some of the England players involved in the upcoming Ashes series as they practiced ahead of the big matches. A photo of the Prince of Wales with the captain of England, Alistair Cook, was shared on the official Clarence House Twitter feed.
