It was the day they caught the train. As the Belgian State Visit to the Netherlands came to an end, Queen Mathilde and Queen Maxima enjoyed a day trip to Utrecht as they prepared to say goodbye. Welcome to the last day of what has been a special State Visit.

It was an early start for Queen Maxima and Queen Mathilde as they took the train to Utrecht to see the new station there which was built by Belgian and Dutch companies and experts.

Who doesn't love a photo of a royal on a train? And we got plenty as the Queen of the Belgians and the Queen of the Netherlands thoroughly enjoyed their time hopping on and off carriages and meeting the big crowds that had turned out to see them.

King Philippe, meanwhile, attended a seminar on digital innovation at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven before visiting a water symposium.

Queen Mathilde, having said farewell to old friend Maxima, then took the time for a quick snack or two as she did that favourite royal pasttimes, trying out food.

It was all part of her visit to the Sligro Foodgroup where she opened an innovation lab providing inspiration for the hotel and hospitality sector. If anyone can make sipping soup in a hat look elegant, then it's Mathilde.

The State Visit came to an end at Castle Heeze where the royal visitors were given an official send off as they headed home after three days of smiles, sparkle and stand out engagements that showcased the friendship between King Philippe, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Mathilde and Queen Maxima. This has been a real success of a State Visit.
