Prince Harry has issued a statement via Kensington Palace asking for his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, to be left in peace. The statement, acknowledged as unusal, highlights Harry's concern for the safety of Meghan Markle and suggests there have been racial undertones to some of the comments made about her since news of their relationship first made headlines
The statement, issued on Twitter, is the first official confirmation of the relationship between Harry and Meghan Markle and details that they have been seeing one another for 'a few months'. But this is far from a celebratory declaration. Prince Harry says he is taking the step of talking about his relationship because of his concerns for Meghan and her family.

Harry's statement says that in the past week, a line has been crossed and that Meghan Markle has been subjected to a wave of harrassment and abuse. It details in particular, comment pieces with what it calls racial undertones and says that social media trolls and comments on web articles have sometimes veered towards sexism and racism. It also says that police have been called in recent times because of concerns over safety.
The words are strong and unprecedented. Harry even goes as far as to quote back some of the justifications given - 'this is all part of the game'. In a hard hitting riposte, the statement says that this isn't a game, 'it is her life and his'. The statement ends by asking that 'fair minded' people understand why it has been issued and asks for consideration to be given about the consequences of driving the story further. Harry's defence of his girlfriend is a strong worded and unprecedented move.
