The Royal Wardrobe

Queen Letizia of Spain in Madrid this week

It's been a week of muted colours and monochrome in the Royal Wardrobe. We've had splashes of colour, thanks to Queen Maxima and Queen Letizia, but even they have also joined the trend of the past seven days - black, white and grey. And that isn't a bad thing. From suits to dresses to downright winners, these wintry shades have been shown off in a series of standout looks. Here are four of the best - and you can vote, as always, on this week's Royal Wardrobe in the poll on the main page.

Queen Letizia went really pared down for an event in Madrid in the week and wowed while she was at it. This charcoal grey suit is simple in just about every way but looks sensational. We've got a whole block of colour, only broken by the single line of buttons, and covered up sleeves but the shaping is superb with details on the peplum that give this texture and then some. Letizia kept the accessories low key as well proving less really is more. A winner.

When you've got a stand out coat that works and then some, the only thing you can do is keep the rest of it simple. That's just what Crown Princess Mary of Denmark did as she carried out an engagement in Copenhagen this week and the results are standout. The jacket, with its cut through sleeves and long draping adds another punch with the silver embellishments. Anything other than the sleek trousers and low key top underneath might have led to overload but Mary makes this one work and then some.

Princess Charlene of Monaco took the black theme and added her national colour to produce an outfit that's pure chic, 100% style and really rather fabulous. The simple black coat and dress worn for celebrations for Monaco's National Day was lifted into the gorgeous by the white hat with red flowers. Add in a touch of what is now Charlene's signature bright red lipstick and you have glamour so effortless it almost hurts.

When the Countess of Wessex finds her style form she is pretty unstoppable and right now, Sophie is in a golden phase. This week we got a knitted two piece suit, worn for an event in Camberley, that wows every step of the way. The cowl collar and peplum waist are good enough on their own to take this one into any top ten but add in the on trend long skirt and the high boots and perfection beckons. Then we see the bag and perfection arrives. This is just really rather fabulous.
